Church Study Day Saturday 14 August 2021

Church Study Day Saturday 14 August 2021

We are fortunate that the situation with the Coronavirus epidemic is such that we can run a Church Study Day this year. The visit, on Saturday, 14 August 2021, is to the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Higham Ferrers and its associated buildings of Archbishop Henry Chichele’s College and Bede House. This year marks the 600 years that have passed since the founding of the college and Bede House. To mark that event St. Mary’s Church has initiated the St. Mary’s 600 Appeal in which the Church hopes to raise £600,000 towards the costs of preserving the church and Bede House.

Once again, we are fortunate that Bruce Bailey FSA will be with us to speak as to the architectural and historical features of this important group of buildings.

The day will start at 11 a.m. when we arrive at the Bede House. We will then look at that, followed by the church exterior and the college. After a break for lunch, we will visit the interior of the church in the afternoon.

The Rev. Michelle Dalliston, the Interim Vicar, has very kindly agreed to see to it that tea and coffee (and possibly cake) are made available to us. Lunch will be at your own expense in one of the cafes or pubs in the town.

There is no charge for the Study Day, but it would be very much appreciated if those attending make a generous donation to the St. Mary’s 600 Appeal.

The booking form (link below) should be sent to me either by post or by email (lugarmawson@msn.com).

The last date for bookings is Saturday, 7 August.

Summer 2021

Summer 2021

Dear friends

‘Freedom Day’ beckons and the end of all restrictions on the 19 July. We await the final confirmation of this on Monday and then the guidance from the Church of England to follow, but it seems clear that we are moving into a new phase where ‘personal responsibility’ is replacing Government legislation as to how we deal with the ongoing realities of Covid.

While we are so looking forward to life returning to normal as much as possible, there is the concern of rapidly increasing numbers of infections and an uncertainty as yet as to quite what that will mean. Our vaccination programme has been amazingly successful, but with 64% of the adult population double-vaccinated, there are still a significant number of people at risk of infection and illness. Our younger people are now the ones most affected and we still don’t know all the implications of long-Covid.

In responding to the Prime Minister’s announcement last week, The Bishop of
London, Sarah Mullally, chair of the Church of England’s Covid Recovery Group, said; ...

Our fun monthly lottery ...

Our fun monthly lottery ...

What is it?

Simply a fun monthly lottery to raise funds for the “600 Appeal” for the restoration and improvement of St Mary’s Church, including a new heating system.

Who can take part?

Anyone and everyone over the age of 16, with a maximum of 100 people.

How does it work?

Each person to contribute £5 monthly. A draw will take place for the prizes at each Farmers’ Market coffee morning, starting in August. Half of the £500 raised each month will generate prizes of £150, £75 and £25, and the other half will go to the Appeal, thus raising £3000 per year for our church.

How do I take part?

Email or ring Amanda Smith, amandajanowski@outlook.com or 07764 589342 to check that a place is still available, and give her your contact details - obviously needed when you win! Then set up a standing order for £5 monthly, starting 1st August 2021, payable to “St Mary the Virgin PCC Higham 600 Appeal”, Sort Code 30-96-09, Account Number 84427260. We suggest that you use as reference “100”, followed by your name.

While we hope you will sign up for the full five year duration of the Appeal, you can do so for a minimum of one year upwards. From then on, there is nothing further to do, other than collect your winnings!
